Das Ensemble tri-Rhena travels to California im August 2011

With their very successful activites, the classical wind group "Ensemble tri-Rhena" has made their mark in the cultural scene of the "three countries corner" (Germany, Switzerland and France near Basel). Since 2006 the ensemble has presented a variety of concerts in varying formations and very soon the clarinetists from this ensemble formed a basset horn trio. This trio has now been invited to participate in the International Clarinet Association's "ClarinetFest" in Los Angeles (http://www.clarinet.org/clarinetFest2011.asp) in August 2011.

Especially for the festival the ensemble was priviledged to receive two new pieces by Willi Vogl (http://www.lvdk.homepage.t-online.de/vogl.html) (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willi_Vogl), clarinetist and composer living in Grenzach-Wyhlen. These pieces
acknowledge on the one hand the character pieces of the 19th century and on the other hand demand a new kind of emotionality from the performers and the listeners. "Nebel fliehn" (Fogs Flee) for three basset horns and "Sonnen glühn" (Sons glow) for clarinet and three basset horns will be premiered together with the composer on the clarinet on May 7th in the Museum Römervilla in Grenzach. After this and several more concerts (see list), Ensemble tri-Rhena will take these pieces with them to Los Angeles for the American premier. In Los Angeles the clarinetist in this work as well as other pieces by Mozart and Joplin will be Michele Zukovsky, first solo clarinetist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.

Further concerts by tri-Rhena will take place in Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo. There the clarinetist will be Virginia Wright, former solo clarinetist of the Portland Symphony Orchestra and now solo clarinetist of the San Luis Obispo Symphony.

The basset horn is even less well known in North America than it is here in Europe and so the ensemble will be functioning as ambassadors for this very special clarinet-instrument. But before the tour starts Ensemble tri-Rhena is presenting the California program in several concerts in the "three countries corner". The program includes pieces by J. S. Bach, W. A. Mozart, Ignatz Pleyel, Willi Vogl and Scott Joplin.
